David Wells

Chief Executive

David Wells is Chief Executive of the Freight Transport Association (FTA) representing industry’s freight interests by road, rail, sea and air. FTA has over 16,000 members who operate more than 220,000 goods vehicles (half of the UK fleet) consign over 90 per cent of freight moved by rail and 70 per cent of sea and air freight.

David joined FTA in April 2009 as Finance and IT Director; subsequently taking on additional responsibility for the Association’s Vehicle Inspection Service, Training and Tachograph Analysis Service. David became Chief Executive in early 2015 and since then has seen membership grow by 10%.

Having completed an Engineering Degree in Liverpool, David studied for membership of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants, qualifying in November 1993 whilst working in industry. His career has centred around engineering and service businesses and has both European and North American finance and operations experience.

James Hookham

Deputy Chief Executive

James has worked at FTA for over 25 years and has served as its Policy Director for most of that time, leading the FTA response on issues such as fuel duty, operator licensing and social legislation and the development of many new initiatives at FTA, including the popular Transport Manager conferences and FTA’s certification marques, Van and Truck Excellence. James is currently responsible for FTA’s Global and European policy team, leading FTA’s response to Brexit and establishing new networks for FTA members through the creation of the Global Shippers’ Forum and its membership of the European Shippers’ Council.  He is FTA’s chief spokesperson and is a frequent commentator on TV and radio and in press coverage.

James is a graduate in Environmental Science from the University of Bradford and studied the safe transport of dangerous goods at the University of Manchester.

Jerry Kane

Commercial Director

Jerry joined the FTA in 2018 with over 25 years commercial experience in the parcels, logistics services and logistics software markets.

During this time Jerry has been the Sales Director of some of the industries leading operators including DHL, Yodel and Eddie Stobart.

In addition to this he has run his own logistics consultancy specialising in business development, product development, sales and marketing.

Emma Emmett

Director of HR & QHS

Emma joined the HR team at FTA in July 2005 and became part of the Executive team in May 2015. She has a strong successful background in HR and has subsequently taken on responsibility for Quality, H&S and Standards within the business.

Having achieved a BA (Hons) History degree at Middlesex University, Emma subsequently achieved her MA in Human Resource Management at the University of Westminster Business School and she is also a Chartered Member of the CIPD working towards her Fellowship. Her career initially centred on HR in the professional services sector working at the London office of Pinsent Masons LLP and latterly for Baker Tilly.

Nigel Smart

Director of IT & Development

Nigel joined FTA in May 2000 as Head of IT, with responsibility for developing the organisations IT and business systems strategy. Nigel has been pivotal in growing the organisations software development capability, and delivering industry leading solutions such as FTA’s Vision platform. Nigel became part of the Exec team in early 2015.

Nigel is degree qualified with a BSc. (hons) Engineering Degree from The City University in London, and has a long history in the field of Electronic Engineering and Information Technology. 

Kevin Green

Director of Marketing and Communications

Kevin is a winning Business to Business marketing leader with over 20 years of experience across the full marketing mix: selling services to SMEs through to the most senior decision makers in the largest companies in Europe. Kevin has led marketing and communications for PwC, KPMG, Balfour Beatty, Mitie, Logica and Capita.

A Fellow of the Institute of Direct Marketing, Kevin graduated from The London School of Economics, where he also edited the UK’s most lively weekly Students’ Union newspaper.

Chris Lipscomb

Director of Operations

Chris joined the FTA in December 2018 with over 25 years of operational leadership experience gained across manufacturing, supply chain and transport management.

During this time Chris has worked for a number of household name multinational food manufacturers , PepsiCo and Mars, as well as a number of family owned and run SME’s in the food and chemical supply industry.

Chris is a graduate of Heriot- Watt University, Edinburgh, where he studied Microbiology.

Elizabeth De Jong

Director of Policy

An economist by background, Elizabeth has a strong track record of leading policy teams to deliver success. She has over 20 years of experience at a senior level in the transport sector which includes consultancy, business analysis, programme management, policy development and policy delivery.  She joined FTA in July 2017 from Rail Delivery Group where she was Director of Policy, and prior to that worked at the Department for Transport.  At FTA she is responsible for UK and Regional Policy, Public Affairs, Research & Information and the Member Advice Centre.
